India–Iraq Healthcare Cooperation

Dr. Rashmi Saluja facilitated the visit of H.E. Mr. Nazar Mirjan Al-Assadi, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq, accompanied by the Embassy's Health Attaché, to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH), New Delhi, to explore opportunities for strengthening healthcare cooperation between India and Iraq. The visit included discussions with Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, Board of Management, SGRH, and focused on fostering direct institutional linkages to facilitate access to advanced and specialised medical care for Iraqi patients.

The discussions highlighted India's growing capabilities in tertiary and super-specialty healthcare and the potential to establish more structured and transparent pathways for Iraqi patients seeking treatment in India. Areas explored included direct facilitation of specialised medical treatment, telemedicine-based outpatient consultations for patients in underserved regions, and potential cooperation in diagnostics, pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution.

The engagement also considered opportunities for capacity building, including specialised training programmes for Iraqi doctors, nurses and paramedical professionals in India. The discussions reflected a shared interest in developing a transparent, ethical and mutually beneficial healthcare framework that could strengthen institutional cooperation between India and Iraq while contributing to improved patient care, medical education and healthcare capacity.
